Character's history since the end of HBP till now:

Bill called off the wedding, but he is still very much in love with Fleur. He was afraid of hurting her, his family, and is still trying to cope. His injuries and appearance have caused him to internalize and he is not the wizard he was before the attack by Fenrir Greyback.

During the war he had a death wish and took on the riskiest of assignments, though even with his reckless behaviour he managed to survive.
